K9 Gives Parents the Keys to The Internet and Some Piece of Mind. – ‘Get Connected’

Recently we bought our daughter a new  laptop. After I brought it home I quickly went from Geek Mode to Parent Mode!  I was worried about hwat my daughter could access on the Wild, Wild West that is the Internet.  It’s not as if we as parents were going to turn her loose on the Internet without supervision but we need some rules and safeguards in place.  Enter K9 Web Protection by Blue Coat.

K9 Web Protection is not software per se (even though you do download a tiny file most of the work is done in the cloud.) but a FREE Service. We are saying service because the way it works is the sites you visit are filtered through their servers as opposed to them being checked through something that’s installed on your computer. . We noticed no drop in PC performance with his app running.

The administrative control panel is actually a Web site you log into to view sites visited, offenses, and add sites to block or accept lists. You can manually enter sites into its settings to have them blocked or accepted. And if you happen to land on a site that for some reason is blocked but you don’t think it should, you can either temporarily override K9′s decision for 15 minutes by entering the administrator password, or override it permanently. You can also configure the K9 Mascot to bark upon landing on a site that is blocked.  This feature sounds interesting in an unto itself.  (I like it personally)

This site also collects brower history so you can see where your child has been and also you set specific times and  limits for Internet access. Say you only want your child to browse between 5-7 PM or for access limited to45 minutes.

We are pleased with this added to to ensure our child is protected from objectionable contect, and just plain weirdos.
